at work, we've got an application that aggregates rss feeds, and stores the posts for republication. we've been having ongoing problems with character encoding. special characters from blogs (mainly “, ” and ’...which look like normal quotes you type out with your keyboard, but they're not) have been making their way into our database as ? or #. not quite what we're looking for. it turned out that when our application was connecting to the database, the application thought it was supposed to be communicating using latin 1 encoding, whereas the server thought the data it was receiving was encoded in utf-8. so, now a crash course:

character encoding in a nutshellCollapse )

as part of my company's deployment strategy, we decided to set up a redundant tomcat server instance behind a load-balancing mod_jk worker to handle the load when the main server instance was being updated. the mod_jk load balancing was easy - by the numbers, right out of the docs. getting two instances of tomcat running to my satisfaction was a little trickier.

it was a total pain in the ass to figure out with the documentation, but totally worth it for the lack of downtime during application upgrades.

as i delve deeper into the money pit that is cosplay, i find myself braving increasingly complex costumes. Of course, increasingly complex costumes mean increasingly complex materials. From fabrics + wood to foam, urethane sheets and hot glue to wonderflex and friendly plastic, and now - liquid plastics and rubbers.

a little background - i've got a couple costumes planned which involve more armour, and i wanted something a little more durable than foam/urethane and a little less heat-sensitive than wonderflex/friendly plastic. searching around on the internet brought up two possible solutions - vacuumforming plastic, and fiberglass.

not wanting to deal with the complexities of vacuumforming, or the hazards of fiberglassing, neither of these solutions appealed to me. i kept looking for another solution, and i stumbled on a brand new product from smooth-on - shell-shock brushable plastic.

like fiberglass, and other liquid plastics, shell-shock comes in two parts which, when mixed, cure into a hard, durable material. the difference with shell-shock is that the mixed compound is thick enough to brush on to vertical surfaces, which would make the armourmaking process with shell-shock similar to that of fiberglassing.

i'm currently planning on using it to coat my weapons for haseo - it's also good for coating styrofoam, and that pink insulation foam stuff, which makes for really lightweight props. photojournal to come later, after some small experimentation.

i finally got a chance to sit down with the wonderflex i got a month or two ago, and get a start on my haseo costume. wonderflex is incredible material to work with. i managed to hammer out the base construction for my vambraces in just over an hour.

"Merchants and captains of the world; Sailors, navigators too; Will weep and mourn this loss with their sins piled up to the sky."

double shot of joy today when, in the mail, i received both my copy of mechademia issue 1, and my recently reacquired g1 license. \^ ^/

video games have once again consumed my life. super swing golf is freakishly addictive, appealing to both my masculine urge to whack at small objects with a stick, and my feminine desire to shop and play dress-up, and guitar hero continues to frustrate me to no end on the harder songs on expert, yet completely fulfill my rock star fantasy with the songs i can complete (and well, at that). ffxii, .hack//g.u., rule of rose, trauma center, ffxiii and splinter cell: da are still in line for completion at some point.

i'm making another push at work for xp practices. we've been doing well with the stand-up meetings the past couple weeks, and i've started writing unit tests again.</guilty> next comes user stories and the planning game, i think. maybe in a week or two. i've started writing my own "to-do"s on story cards in preparation. must persevere.

alright, it's been a week and a half two weeks, and although i've been trying to power my way through ffxii this week, i've still logged a significant amount of time on the wii, and figured it was time to share my thoughts.

wii + game impressionsCollapse )

no regrets, not that i was expecting any. now, to reformulate my plan to suck my littlest cousin into the gaming vortex. wii bowling and tennis lessons today were slightly less than successful.
